I’m Martin Fennema, a Dutch photographer working between Sweden and the Netherlands. Through The Art is Dutch, I create cinematic portraits and visual narratives shaped by atmosphere, character and close attention to human presence.
Photography allows me to slow down and look more carefully. I’m interested in the moments that often pass unnoticed: a subtle expression, a gesture, the way someone occupies a space or the traces left behind by everyday work. These details can say more than a perfectly staged image. My aim is to create photographs that feel honest and considered, while leaving room for the viewer to bring their own interpretation.
Working between Sweden and the Netherlands has influenced the way I see light, landscape and people. I’m drawn to the contrast between quiet Nordic spaces and the directness and visual density of Dutch life. Both places offer their own rhythm, colour and sense of identity, and these qualities naturally find their way into my work.
My practice sits at the intersection of portraiture, documentary photography and fine art. When I photograph people, I prefer to build trust and allow the image to develop through conversation and observation. I give direction when it is useful, but I avoid forcing a moment. This creates portraits that feel composed without losing their individuality or sense of presence.
I work with individuals, artists, cultural organisations and independent brands on commissioned portraits, editorial stories and long-form projects. Every collaboration begins with a conversation about the subject, purpose and intended audience. From there, I develop a clear visual approach that respects the story and remains consistent from the first idea to the final selection.
